Mixed Grill

Tonight's dinner was an assortment of American grilling classics: burgers, hot dogs, and chicken breasts. As Karen and I were planning on going out for a movie, I wanted to keep things simple.

A shot of the grill. Sorry, no plated pics as I was a bit rushed:

And for you pyros out there, this is what happens when you mix fire and wind:

For the hot dogs, I made shallow cuts at an angle and marinated them in wooster and Ddogs Original BBQ rub. Different flavor, and the cut edges open up slightly during cooking for a different look. Not your ordinary dogs.

The burgers were a mix of 1 pound each 80/20 ground chuck and 96/4 extra-lean beef. Seasoning was a few drops wooster and a good coating of the Original rub. Again, tasty and very juicy.

The chicken actually has several flavors. I did one breast with Ddogs Original rub, one with Ddogs Maple, and one with Ddogs Apple. The other three I seasoned with my own blend of salt, pepper, garlic, onion, and paprika (those will be for future use). All I can say is I wish I'd done more with the apple. It was the winner in my house, at leat this time. It had a good flavor with a hint of sweet apple at the end.

Looks yum. I really like how you did those cuts in the dogs. I'll have to try that sometime. With a mustard slather perhaps?? That would probably be good huh?

:idea: :idea: I tried to brush mine last weekend with bbq sauce. Didn't do anything for me :(
Did not think of making cuts in them and marinating.

I shamelessly took the idea for cutting and soaking the dogs from the book _Barbecue Nation_. It's on page 272-3. (A combo of "Tube Steak, College Style" and "Porcupine Dogs".)

I'll warn ya, though, they're still hot dogs. You won't make taste like steak, but you'll add a different layer of flavor. And the cuts are good for holdin' condiments.

looks good Rob! When I start my chimney, I remove the top grate of my grill and set the chimney down on the bottom grate to get the coals lit. The coals are going to be down on that bottom grate anyway and that can eliminate any extra flames (that might catch something you don't want) :)

I actually had the chimney down on the bricks for several reasons.

1. My grill wasn't in position to cook and needed some cleaning.
2. I was taking pics so if someone asks how to light a chimney, I can show them.
3. When I do a slow smoke, I use the bricks to light chimney 'cause the grill grate isn't available. It's become a habit, I guess.

I didn't expect the wind to be a problem, but it sure shows how effective a little canola oil and paper towels can be, don't it? :wink:

Hey Rob... ain't nothing wrong with a mixed grill!! We do that now and again.

Sounds like Karen would be in good company with my wife and son. They are both Harry Potter freaks! They saw it the other evening, the night that it came out.

Personally, I can't stand that movie/books!

Hey, cool idea with the hotdogs, Sandman. I hear you that a dog is still a dog, but I'm going to try experimenting with getting some flavors inside like this.
