Smokin Kingsford...

Postby nascarchuck » Fri May 11, 2007 2:18 am

I have noticed lately that my Kingsford isn't ashing over like it was a couple of weeks ago while in the chimney. Have also noticed that if I add another chimney to what I already have going in the CG, it seems to put out black smoke for a few minutes.

I haven't noticed any of these problems until recently. I am trying to decide if the problems developed after I opened a new bag thinking maybe it's just something with that particular bag. I am almost out of this bag and will open a new bag probably after the next cook.

Any ideas?
Chuck

Sometimes after a bag is opened it will absorb moisture from the humidity in the air. If the top isn't rolled up good or it's been rainy it will do like that. Could have been sitting somewhere close to a wet environment before you bought it. The Wal-mart by us sets the pallets in the garden section outside but under cover. they are always watering the plants and the bottom of the pallets get wet. :D Them little briquettes are like sponges sometimes

Was wunderin about moisture.

Forgot to say that I keep my charcoal in a plastic container that is "air tight". May have gotten moisture before I transferred it. And we have had alot of rain and is really humid!

Storage in a plastic can with no vent holes will cause it to sweat and hold moisture inside the can. Drill a few vent holes to let the moisture out. Metal cans work better for charcoal storage. :D :D

Hmmmmm.... Guess that I never thought about that one!

OK... How about a question for everyone... What are y'all using to store your charcoal?

I store mine in the bag (rolled up) inside my laundry room.

Karen'd *kill* me!

I had an open bag of Kingsford in my garage for *years*! I used it for Miss Piggy late March with no problems. I was worried about having trouble, but never had a lick.

I keep bags on a small pallet in the storage shed. :D We buy 30 bags at a time from a restaurant supply house. They give us a real good bulk price. :D My buddy and I split the order and we both save. :D
Open bags that are by the smoker, I roll up the bag and put in a metal trash can ( 26 gal size ) with small vent holes drilled in it. :D :D
