Since the rust is just mainly on the bottom of the inside of the fire box I'm gonna go ahead and go with this for now and use an older corded drill I have and see how this goes. Saw a lot of reviews on this saying the metal does not fly off of there wire wheels. I'll post some pics later. Thanks

Good Luck with this project and be "extremely cautious" with eye protection - - - not just for flying wire bristles but flying ?anything? :salut:

Word of warning about using a grinder and wire wheels. DON’T. Yes the wires do come off, yes it will lodge itself in you when it breaks off and yes it hurts. Buying a grinder to remove the rust is ok but do not use a wire wheel only use a flapper. You will clean it significantly faster with some acid proof gloves, a green or red pad and so type of acid. All you do it apply the acid to the metal and rub it for a short while and wipe it off. The rust is gone all the way to the surface and if you need to roughen it up then use the flapper. This pic is from experience with a wire wheel. They are very dangerous and even with two hands on it the torque of the grinder will cause it to fly out of your hands and cause an injury. Trust me. Work smarter not harder.

This took 6 weeks to heal.

The wire wheel attachment for the drill does a pretty good job of getting thick surface rust off. Just gonna hit with the sander to get everything smooth enough for a nice "re-season". I'm not gonna go bare metal as I dont think it is necessary for the firebox. What are y'alls thoughts?

Looks ok to me. Wipe it down with some old cooking oil ( or spray with Pam ). Do the inside of the cooking chamber the same way and let them season when you build the first fire. Spray or wipe the insides for the first two or three cooks and both the chamber and fbox will start looking like a seasoned skillet in time.
If you’ll keep the ashes cleaned out after each cook it’ll still be a solid cooker for many years to come. Always good to see a quality cooker being same from the rust worms.

Looks great! Will look even better after a coat of veggie oil.

Here is an update for you guys. I am very pleased the way the pit came out. The pit was sitting for about 20 years covered and I was glad to bring it back to life. After about 4 total hours of sanding and wire wheeling until I removed surface rust from outside to a smooth finish as well and the inside although I did not go to bare metal. Then sprayed the inside down with pam and placed about 4 large mesquite chunks in firebox as well as some in the barrel. I used rustoleum high temp paint but the quart you have to brush on as I think I am getting a better coat of enamel on the pit vs spray paint and after painting I believe it to be true. Next is cleaning the old grill grates and I plan to soak them in 50/50 vinegar and water solution along with a wire brush. The pics are from after the season smoke. Overall job took about 5 hours of labor but well worth it cant wait to get smokin. Thanks for everyone's input again.
