Tejas Sized!

Postby rms827 » Sat Jul 28, 2018 9:34 pm

Well, the Braves may have banned the Tomahawk, but that didn't stop me tonight. :D Went to Costco to get a tri tip and they had prime grade rib eye tomahawks for $12 a pound.

I'm a bit disappointed that I slightly over-cooked it. That was partly the thermometer's fault (it's reading low), and partly my lack of experience with a piece of meat that thick (outside of brisket). All in all, not bad for a first time.

I've never had 1 of these either. But I see it's coming. There's a food truck not far from me, they sell these. Yours look bang on .

Thanks All! :salut:

Russ, they're fairly rare everywhere since it's an expensive cut of meat. Worth it though. We split it in half and still ate like royalty.

If we do it again, I'll know the thickness of the steak won't affect it quite as much as I'd thought. I should add I did the usual routine and put it on the Rec-Tec before the Weber even though there was no pic on the smoker. I figured I'd get a more even cook on it being that thick and all. No smoke ring, but it had a bit of smoke flavor.

We love a good steak, mainly fillet but I'll try those next time. I serve with a steak Dianne garlic sauce.
