Why did I pick today...

Thanksgiving day the weather was nice.
Friday was nice enough to blow the last of the leaves and pick them up with my JD mower.
Things started going to crap yesterday. Was planning on smoking the bird yesterday but we got invited to a friends house to watch my dawgs play the Cougars in the Apple Cup. Plus my wife reminded me that we are having Christmas Eve at our house and she wanted the lights up. My comment was I'd be more then happy to get the boxes of lights out and set up the ladder for her.....well that didn't go over too well. :dont:
I got all the string of lights out of the boxes and plugged them to make sure they worked. About half of them didn't work so I hung up the ones that did work. Only took a couple hours. When I was done hanging them I plugged them in to see how they looked. As those of you that hang up Christmas lights I'm sure you've been here before, half the ones I hung up decided to quite working :deadhorse:

Oh well, birds in the pellet now and my dawgs kicked butt last night

That is a great view. I enjoy rainy day cooking from time to time.

Bird is coming along nicely. Decided against spatchcocking it after seeing OSBs bird.
Got about 25 degress to go.

Yup yup,
Been there a few times. Every year, we all get a free ( fresh ) I mean ( FRESH ) bird from one of our accounts called Jaindl Farms. They give out hundreds every Thanksgiving, between 12 - 15 lbers.

They aren't pumped up with the crud that alot of turkeys come with, although they aren't Technically free range, they are veg fed and they are very very Lean. I also know that the dark meat is more reddish than any other bird I've had. I've tried everything to keep them moist, the only way is to cook them in the oil less fryer. I've done them on the Akorn, deep fried in peanut oil, and oven cooked and they are ok, but oil less does the Justice, I just don't care for the color of the legs or the texture.

I'm guessing u ran into the reddish color or toughness of the dark meat ?

Yea WV.... Dark meat was really tough. Threw the wings away. Couldn't even get the meat to pull off the wings. Legs and thighs I got less then half the meat off.
This is the 2nd time I've done one of these tough gobblers. First one I figured I must have screwed it up. Well now I know better.

Thanks for confirming WV

Now that Y'all mention this, I'm thinking that is what happened with my Fat Hen last year - - - did it in the oven and YUCK doesn't even describe it  :whiteflag:
