Two quick things...I did a test burn today with four digital probes spread evenly across the cooking grid (no meat) each probe sitting about an inch above.
Temp at fire box opening was not as hot as the two in the middle with the one near (but not all the way to) the exhaust, ran hottest of all.
I tried with and without plates same results although I could move the temps around a bit depending on the gap between the plates.
Overall, the above trend prevailed no matter how large the fire (got to 500) or low (coals darn gone at 225)..

Also the Homelite splitter did a bunch of work and then sprung a slow oil seap at the shaft seal..back to HomeDespot tomorow!
