BBQ Lingo

Postby DATsBBQ » Sun Aug 04, 2013 11:10 am

It was suggested in another post that newbies almost need a dictionary of BBQ terms to keep up with the rest of us. I thought that was a good idea. So let's start a glossary of BBQ Terms. At the end of the week or some such I'll add additional posts/suggestions into this unofficial lexicon of Q.

So to get the ball rolling lets start with this:

ABT - Atomic Buffalo Turd (Stuffed jalapeno wrapped in bacon).
BGE – Big Green Egg.
Bullet – Vertical water pan style smoker.
Butt - Upper pork shoulder (AKA Boston Butt)
BWS - Backwoods Smoker.
Chimney -Common term for a can style charcoal lighter.
CI - Cast Iron.
ECB – El Cheapo Brinkmann, a bullet style cooker with no vents.
Egg Cult - Devotees of the BGE.
Flower Pot – any kamado style ceramic cooker.
Gasser – smoker fueled by propane or natural gas.
Gas Belcher -synonym for gasser.
Gator – the owner of this board, not affiliated with Gator Pits.
Gator Pits – popular brand of offset smokers.
HDAF - Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil.
HF - Hot & Fast
Kettle – Weber style charcoal grill.
Klose – popular brand of offset smokers.
Lump – whole / chunk charcoal with no fillers or binders.
Minion Method – a method of controlling charcoal combustion attributed to Jim Minion.
Packer – a whole untrimmed brisket (flat + point).
Pellet Heads - Devotees of pellet style cookers.
Pellet pooper - a cooker that is fueled by wood pellets.
Poke test – a method of determining when a brisket or butt is done.
Primo – popular brand of ceramic grills/smokers.
PSDOF Cooker -Plate Steel, Dropped Offset Firebox
PSers -Owners/users of PSDOF style cookers
Stick Burner – offset smoker.
Texas Crutch – aluminum foil.
UDS – Ugly Drummer Smoker.
Weed Burner - propane torch.
WSM – Weber Smoky Mountain smoker.
Yardbird – chicken or other domesticated fowl.

Best suggestion of recent note. Would volunteer a couple:

PSDOF Cooker - Plate Steel, Dropped Offset Firebox (my term)
PSers - Surley, overly opinionated, stubborn, hidebound fans of PSDOFs (I am one). Tend to be old school fundamentalists. Inherent affinity for the Big Three (Brisket, Beer, and Bourbon). Cousins of the UDS crowd, aka the Drummers.
Gas Belcher - Secondary term for gasser
Chimney - Common term for a can type charcoal starter.
Egg Cult - Devotees of the BGE. An almost religious devotion to Eggcellence. Fond of beachfront property, shrimp on the barbie, and martinis shaken not stirred.
Pellet Heads - Proponents of Traegers and other pellet poopers.

There are some others I will remember after my Oldtimer's medication kicks in.

And this one was aimed at me at one point:

CAB: Cheap A** Brinkmann

Just gave away my last CAB to a group of young friends, for whom it is their best alternative.

Add it to the list.

Are you talking about those torches that they carry at the hardware store? Or is this slang for something else? (See how dumb some people are?! Meaning myself. No clue.)
