Preferred Lump?

Postby Swamp Donkeyz BBQ » Fri Nov 09, 2012 10:40 am

I've been using B&B quite a bit. It's pretty east to get at most stores in my hometown. I've only been using lump for about two months.

What's your favorite Lump Charcoal and why?

Royal Oak because it is easy to get at wally world. I've imported some B&B from Waco closest place to get it for me. It's good and I wold probably use it exclusively if it was more available in my area. Lately I have been using HEB grand Champion all natural Briquettes I think it is going to become my new go to at least in my UDS and my Mini WSM, It burns as good as RO & B&B but gives a nice even long lasting heat because of it's uniformity.

Extruded Coconut charcoal is the absolutely most inert smelling
long burning stuff out there.
It's also rare and expensive.
I usually just use Royal Oak from Wallyworld or if I'm in a
bind-TraderJoes,Whole Foods,et al...you know,the metric
Cowboy rebrands.
I'll pass on cooking before using briquettes.

I've been using a lot of Royal Oak lately. Before that it was B&B. Just stocked up on a ton of Ozark Oak, though, mainly cuz I had some buy 1 get 1 free coupons. Brought it down to about $5 a bag (10lb bag) before taxes.

For lump it's either roal oak or B&B.. I've noticed, and maybe it was just blind luck on the bags I selected, B&B seems to have much larger chunks.. Anyone else see this?

I have been using B&B for years, mostly because it is the easiest thing to get around here. However I have found lately that the bag contains quite a lot of small pieces which make it difficult to start up in a chimney starter. Guess it just all depends on how much handling it goes through before I get it.

I like B&B Oak, and have used Best of the West from Sam's but the lump I use the most is RO

Nice stash! My wife scored a couple bags of Best of the West mesquite lump awhile back, on clearance, for $2 a bag. I thought it was good stuff but when she went back it was all gone.

I use a lot of RO as it is usually pretty easily obtained but I prefer Wicked Good, but is pricey......picked up some Humphreys lump late in the season and liked it. Note: I only use lump when Pig Roasting and always add a little hickory in with it.

Where do you get the Wicked lump from? Is it worth the price difference? If it truly is "Wicked Good" I might try and score some for comp cooking.

I like RO. Last year it became scarce from December until the Superbowl. Now is a good time to stock up.

I prefer True Cue lump from Home Depot for long smokes. It's very dense and smoky. After that HEB hardwood lump is good for shorter smokes. I got a hunch it's B&B lump in an HEB bag. B&B oak lump is also very good for long smokes.

I appreciate the link. There's a distributor about 30 minutes from my house. I'm going to sneak down there real soon.
