base recipe for BBQ sauce?

Postby plmcrzy » Tue Aug 28, 2012 3:17 pm

Is there a basic base recipe for bbq sauce that you can add your own signature style to? I posted a bbqsauce recipe that used jagermeister and thought about trying one with red stag black cherry flavored bourbon whiskey. Not sure if there are certain things that should not be mixed together or ?. Sorry if this is a vague question. Thanks for the help. shawn

Most every sauce recipe I have read include the following:
ketchup
salt
sugar
vinegar
Blk pepper
mustard
then whatever signature items you feel like tossing in.
I do find that it is easier to put in all the thin liquids along with the spices and brew it like a tea then stir in the slurries like ketchup and such off the heat It makes for a more flavorful sauce. Here is a good place to do some research on the topic http://www.hungrymonster.com/recipe/rec ... e&ttl=1251
Never met a cow I didn't like with a little salt and pepper.

I would highly suggest Paul Kirk's Championship BBQ Sauces and Rubs cookbook. It is a great resource on making your own sauce.

Here's my latest recipe:

1) Drop money in mail to Sucklebusters;
2) Dan gets money;
3) Dan mails me sauce;
4) I get sauce;
5) I eat sauce;
6) I get happy.

Bobby: "No."

I second the brewing of the spices in the thin liquids first. I tried that last week after reading about it and it does make a difference!
