Need recommendations for Gruene, TX

For dining, you have to go by the Gruene River Grill, its sort of next to the grist mill, but totally blows the food away. the atmosphere is great and the service is better. Good show, Reckless Kelly will have the hall jumpin'...literally. On a side note I'm a beer guy, but my wife gets their appletini, and I don't mind saying it's pretty darn good! Need more direction, let me know, we spend alot of time there.

Coopers is now in New Braunfels...think I would take that over Rudys.

I lived for some years in New Braunfels, and have left in Gruene way too much expended time, money and perspiration. I'm not impressed with any of the 'name' places there any more - it is becoming more and more a cutesy Disneyland for tourists rather than the great local hideaway it once was. Such is progress, I suppose.

That being said, I really like a little hidden-away place called "Oma's Secret Garden". It's around back of Oma Gruene's Inn at 1263 Gruene Road, a few doors east of Gruene Hall. Decent light food, good bier, and good local singer/songwriter music on the weekends. This is where you will find the old timers and locals who want the less commercial side of music and fun.

Cooper's BBQ is just west of the intersection of Common St. and Hwy 46, very convenient to Gruene. It's kind of catty-corner from Rudy's, but down a few doors on the left and set back from the road. Although I haven't had the opportunity to eat at that location, if it's anywhere near the quality of the one in Llano, it will be the best available in New Braunfels. I'd avoid Rudy's, the New Braunfels Smokehouse, Oma's, and the others in town.
