Pecan Lodge Beef Rib

Postby Boots » Wed Sep 18, 2013 3:57 pm

So, I took an executive lunch break from the office today, gathered up all my young innocent and uncorrupted associates and tooled over to Justin's Pecan Lodge for a re-visit. Turns out they had the beef rib on special today.

Was it good? Look at the picture and tell me what you think.

Be well, brethren.

I went with a buddy on Saturday morning to Pecan Lodge. I got there at 9:35 and was 12th in line. A buddy met me there and we had a plan. I was to buy a beef rib and a pork rib, he was to buy a pound of moist brisket and a pork rib. then we would split the brisket and beef rib. That beef rib was what we were looking forward to the most. So, when we got to the register at 11:25, the beef rib was no longer on the menu. I was like WTH Tex? He apologized and said someone had just called in and placed an order for 5 racks of beef ribs! He said I agree, that's total BS and there should be a limit to how much can be ordered over the phone. I agreed and we just got an extra pork rib and a sausage link. That really is crap. People go stand in line for hours to place their order, and someone simply picks up the phone at 11:00 and clears out a whole menu item on a Saturday. I think that is terrible customer service. Am I wrong to be a little peaved? This is the 2nd time I've been to PL and I was totally let down the first time too when I ordered moist brisket and I got two end pieces that were 75% fat. I should have just taken it back and asked for 2 different slices, but I was pressed for time as it was during a lunch break at work.

This time the brisket was good, but I gotta say, I went to Lockhart Smokehouse in Oak Cliff on Friday for lunch and the brisket was darn near identical both in appearance and taste. So, for me, I'm done with Pecan Lodge. I will give it to Justin, he makes the best pork ribs I've ever had. Both times I've been, I've really loved his ribs. They are cooked with what seems to be the same rub as his brisket. It's so different, but darn good. Both times I've also gotten sausage and been unimpressed with it. It is all beef and greasy as it could be. Here are a few pics.

I've been seven or eight trips, and never had a bad meal. just my experience. I try to go Wednesdays now, because it's not as busy since he opened up that day. Will have to see how the new place is when he opens up in Deep Ellum. No doubt, everybody gets a clunker now and then. You just seem to be consistently drawing the black bean, unfortunately. If you do go back, I hope you get the best rack of the day.

I've been to PL three times now and I honestly have not been impressed once. The brisket is cooked well but the taste is just off to me for some reason. I've eaten at all of the top 4 and I just don't get PL. Honestly the brisket and the pork ribs are better at BBQ on the Brazos and you don't have to wait in a 2 hour line. I say replace PL with La Barbecue in the TM top 4.
