Finally planning 1st trip to Pecan Lodge on Friday for lunch

Postby erbeman » Mon Aug 12, 2013 10:33 am

Going to get there at 10:15 and hold a spot for my coworkers. My mouth is already salivating just thinking about how good the brisker is going to be. Pics to follow next week.

Thank You to all the fine folks here for all the tips and advice so I can now smoke a chunk of meat and folks actually eat it.

My thoughts:

Ribs - The best rib I have ever had. It was amazing and large. A nice full spare with good smoke flavor and a nice little bark to it.

Brisket - I was actually a little dissapointed. While good, it wasn't great to me. I may have just not gotten the best slice, but I like the brisket at Hutchins better. I lark a nice deep smoke and this brisket just had a kiss of smoke, which is what some folks like. The ribs had more smoke to them than the brisket. It was prepared well. Plenty moist, and a pretty good bark.

Sausage - Ehhh, it was just ok to me. Its different for sure. He makes it himself I believe. It tastes like beef, not pork and is extrememly greasy.

Mac & Cheese - Ehhh, it was ok. I only ate half of what they gave me. Its in a cheese sauce that's a little runny. It was just a little bland to me. I don't like okra, but serveral folks got it at my table and it sure looked good.

Bread - They don't give you any!! What the heck? How can you have BBQ in Texas with no white bread?

Price - Ehh, a bit on the expensive side, but not too bad. I had the 3 meat combo that had 1 rib, 1 sausage, 1 good slice of brisket and a little chunck that was pretty much all fat, along with a side of mac and a can of coke. The total was almost $19.

All in all, I'm glad I went because now I know. It was worth the wait in line, this one time. I don't see myself doing it again though. The smart thing to do is get a group of 4-5 folks and head up there and order the "Trough". Its basically a big sampler of all their meats and some sides for $65 and it feeds 4-5 people. They have a walk up register for large orders over 5 lbs only, that doesn't have a line. We witnessed several folks walk in and go straight up to the register and order! No waiting at all and they got their food before I even got to place my order. This will be the only way I eat Pecan Lodge in the future.

Glad to see he finally quit saucing the ribs, I feel that sauce was holding back the ribs from their true potential. If the brisket didnt impress you, you probably got a bad cut.
