Welcome to the forum, I hope your visits here will take you away from the place you are in and give you a small minute of thoughts to a different place that becomes a recluse of refreshment for you.
Lots of great cooks on here to give you some guidance on honing your cooking skills.

Long Shot - here are a few "cheap way" ideas I scared up to help out, things like getting your buds to pitch in for 8-10 cinder blocks and some rebar, and you can rub and skewer some chickens over a ground pit barbecue set up. And there is a link to my alma mater's Texas A&M barbecue school - yep, they actually have a highly esteemed program there with an actual college credit course - that has stuff on improvised barbecue cooking. Also included a few "innovative" methods developed by rednecks the world over, mainly for laughs (proceed with caution on some). You can even make a grill out of a tall boy beer can. And some folks like to combine hot tubbing with a barbecue. I think the combination cooler and cooker is particularly... creative.

I would bet money your gunny or LT would let you guys dig a hole as a "field cooking exercise". In fact, I think I may try this myself over the weekend as an experiment (I've been itching to do it) and will post some photos. One tip: raw black steel grates or skewers are ok for cooking on, but never use galvanized or old refrigerator grates, they can be toxic.
