New here from Rockwall, Tx

Postby kenrockwall » Wed Oct 05, 2016 1:49 pm

Just found this place while doing research on smokers. I used to have an old, cheap Brinkmann Smoker and did ok on it until it just wore out/rusted out too. Then went to a Brinkmann grill "smoker" barrel that works great for grilling but not for smoking.

Now it is time to move up and better. After lots of reading, comparing, researching, I think I'm more confused than before I started. Not sure where to put the questions but I'm looking for an offset smoker that will last years and won't go for the Wally World specials, Home Depot or Lowe's cheapo (thin metal) junk.

Welcome, Ken  Don't understand about the Brinkman ?barrell? smoking problem. That is, if you are speaking of what we call the ECB (El Cheapo Brinkman). It's the one that has a water pan and domed lid kinda like a Drum Smoker but cheaper. I have smoked Turkeys, Ribs, Chickens and Roasts successfully on mine and I've had more than a few. OK, that's enough of that because they are off the market any how.

So Howdy :texas: and make yourself at home. :salut:

Hey Ken - welcome. Many NTX folks here. I'm in Little Elm.

As far as your smoker question, what's your budget? There is such a wide variety of smokers it's always best to start with what you want to spend then find the best bang for your buck in that range.

Welcome to the forum and Pandora's box!! It was asked already about the budget, if you're not willing to get an off the shelf unit from any of the local chains, I'd suggest a local pit builder then. There is also a couple places that sell some good quality local made pits. There's an outdoor patio and bbq store around the DFW I went to that had some NICE smokers in the 1800 range.

Welcome! As mentioned, budget's the number 1 consideration.

Once you've determined that, as Txdragon said, go check out some local places just to get a feel for what you can get for your budget.

There's a whole lot of good info on this site, so welcome to the disease!
