Happy summer - first day of summer holiday

Postby Norway Joe » Sat Jun 26, 2021 9:18 am

Wish you all a happy summer.

We started the first part of our summer holiday today. 14 days on the boat. Left Oslo this morning in beautiful weather. Headed for the biggest island in the fjord. I'ts called the "H' -island". Found a great spot to dock. Island is very close to the fortress that sunk the German cruiser Blucher which I told about before. Half of the island still belongs to the military.

This island has a long history of habitation. År least back to the 1400. Lots of herb gardens around the island which was planted around year 1400 of people belonging to the Mariachurch.

Island had some old artillery around 1891. Several German torpedoboats are sunk along the eastern side. At one place there's an old execution place where the Germans killed 6 men in 1942.

The island has also hosted a TNT factory since World War one. Production stopped due to an explosion.

I will post some pictures underway if someone wants to follow along.

Even though I am insanely jealous of the breathtaking view (or maybe because!) I definitely will follow along.

I there much Wildlife (the four legged kind) on those Islands that would be a threat to the Goats?

No. Only Deer, Elch, Fox and Badgers. As you can see fromnthe picture below the island isn't very big, even if it's the biggest in the fjord.Image

Will definitely be following you on your vacation. I’ll be taking mine at the end of summer when we’re not as busy. So keep those pictures coming please.

And so it ended. Left the island this morning. When I was accelerating a loud bang was heard from the engine and all foreard power lost. Drifting around there was no other option than calling the rescue service. They came within minutes and towed us to another harbor. Very professional and skilled folks.

Need new assistance tomorrow to get us to the repair shop. Typical when engine and the sterndrive was serviced before the summerseason.Image

Just a few "Aquabatics" that a Boat Owner learns to deal with, eh Joe?

Good Luck with the Repairs and Continued Vacation  :wav: :salut:

Parts: I guess you have to calculate in some problems.

Rescue boat captains know how to maneuver their ship.

They came and picked up another boat in the harbor now. Not much free space while backing out of the harbor with another boat hanging to their side.ImageImageImageImage

There's no limit in what you can spend on a boat.

Grailsback. Probably not. The boat is a 2013 model but with only 450 hours on the engine. I suspect a sterndrive failure. Depending on what is wrong it can be fixed or not. A new one is 50.000 usd. I think the guy the serviced the sterndrive didn't do it properly but not easy to prove.

Luckily I signed up for an expanded insurance coverage that covers engine and sterndrive failure so I should be covered with a limited amount. Maybe 1500 usd.

Rescue didn't cost anything since I'm a member of the sea Rescue service. These boats have a mix of professional crew. Yearly membership is 120 usd so well worth the money. They will also tow us for up to 3 hours the repair shop tomorrow.

The city we are docked in is a famous small city dated back to the 1600. A very charming place with narrow streets and wooden houses.ImageImageImageImage
