Re: Norwegian Dog News
This is going from bad to worse. 8 more dogs sick since yesterday.
New development is that cases have appeared in Finland and now probably in Genova, Italy with the same bacteria. They classify the identified and suspected bacteria as the same family as E-coli and Salmonella but nobody knows why it suddenly have spread to so many dogs.

Re: Norwegian Dog News
This has gone from serious to a pandemic. Joe, I've reached out to my alma mater which has one of the finest vet schools in the world and a first-class pathogen and necropsy department, to see if they can look into offering aid to the Norwegian government. If you have any contacts they can reach out to (you being a distant relation to the King as I recall), let me know and I will forward that information on to them.

Mr Joe, look after our Fonzie. Hope they get it figured out soon. I don't have a dog now, but have had some good dogs in my life. I would be crushed if something like that happened to my dog.

Boots is correct in his classification of the A&M vet school.

Re: Norwegian Dog News
Wow. Thats is great. They have probably found the bacteria that causes the disease. It's called providencia alcalifaciens. The problem is they can't find the source or the reason why so many dogs suddenly gets infected now.Boots wrote:This has gone from serious to a pandemic. There are three agencies working together to solve this: the veterinary institute the FDA and the vet school. Lots of professors and experts working together with more than 2000 veterinarians around the country.
I think this is the lady in charge of the investigation.

Re: Norwegian Dog News
Great they may have identified the bacteria, now they need a treatment. Will forward this on.

Re: Norwegian Dog News
Thanks. It's scary. We only let Fonzie out in the garden for the time being. Lots of frightened dog owners now. Fonzie is a beloved family member in our house so we are careful.GRailsback wrote:Mr Joe, look after our Fonzie. Hope they get it figured out soon. Luckily it seems that they are getting better at treating this, so more dogs survive, but it is imperative to come to the vet immediately when symptoms occur. Old and young dogs are at most risk of dying. Problem is that all the animal hospitals are full.
I think every dog owner would be scared of this.

Thanks. Appreciate it. They are putting a lot of effort into finding he source.Boots wrote:Great they may have identified the bacteria, now they need a treatment. Will forward this on.
The bacteria is killed by antibiotics as far as I know. Problem is the disease progresses so fast that antibiotics often don't have time to work.

Re: Norwegian Dog News
The lady I reached out to at A&M is in the Necropsy section, sent her Ms. Jarp's contact information. If you want to forward her contact information to Ms. Jarp, see below. Maybe A&M has seen this bacteria before and has worked a faster treatment (?). Dunno, reaching for straws a bit here.

Boots is correct. The Aggies are the butt end of a lot of jokes but in all seriousness on things like this they are the experts.

Re: Norwegian Dog News
A little update. Dogs keep getting sick. 15 new cases since Friday. Treatment is getting better so 3 of these have died. Status on the rest unknown. People are probably bringing in their dog immediately when they show symptoms so treatment can start early.
Veterinary institute has eliminated a few more virus diseases. That also means they are not entirely sure the disease is caused by the suspected bacteria. Only that the bacteria can cause symptoms like this
