Celebrating our constitutional day

Postby Norway Joe » Fri May 17, 2019 1:54 am

Today a great day here. 17th of may is our constitutional day with big parades all over the country. We go downtown Oslo with tens of thousands other. Watching the parade, eating icecream and hotdogs.
Almost everybody dresses up in suits or traditional costumes. You can see the traditional costume on my wife in the added picture. Often girls get it to their confirmation at age 15 and have them for life. They are hand sewed and with lots of broderies. Can take a year to sew. The youngest kid is wearing a children's version, but it is not handmade, and not in a regional pattern.

The parade in Oslo passes by the parliament and the royal castle, greeting the king and the queen.

Later we gather for a great meal. And eating the traditional dessert kransekake. I posted a recipe in the dessert section.

Here's a link about the day:

Here's a YouTube video of the beginning of the parade in Oslo. It shows the mayor leading the parade, walking up to the castle and greeting the royal family. The band first plays the "Kingsong" and then the national anthem for the king before the parade starts.

Thanks folks. Appreciate your nice comments.

Just want to share one more thing. At the end of the parade in Oslo is the king's guard. They do a drill show on the main street. These folks are amazing. The guard consists of conscripted folks. They serve for 12 months, but in may they've only served for 8 months.
This video is from some years ago, but they about the same each year.

The video is a bit long, but you can watch from about 8 min. in the video, where the coolest part begins.

Thanks. Great day. Lucky with the weather. Warm and nice. The day after it poured all day. Not good for the "bunad" with all the silver.

Joe, loved this. Outstanding close order drill, and with fixed bayonets. They must be good, because I did not notice a single eyepatch in the bunch. We have a similar unit at my alma mater Texas A&M University within our Cadet Corps called the Fish Drill Team (Fish being a term for a freshman in his first year of university). All 18 and 19-year-old volunteers. It’s a great thing to watch, and a 70+ year tradition.

Love that your nation also celebrates its freedom and holds it dear. And a very handsome family as well, you are justifiably proud.

Bobby: "No."

Thank you Boots.

I think it exciting to watch military drills. We only have these. But they are really good. These are also 18/19 years old and only have practiced for 8 months. These guys (and girls) also stand guard outside the royal castle, but armed with the AG-3 which is the standard carabin in our army.

I know there are several similar corps around but most of them are professional soldiers serving for years. These only serve for 12 months which I understand is similar to the one you mentioned.

Agree on the importance of celebrating and guarding the constitution of a free and democratic country. It's under pressure from a few states, among them our neighbor up north.
