Can't find any clean oak splits in Austin!

Postby Chasdev » Tue Jan 05, 2016 6:23 am

Man, am I peaved off, I can't find anyone willing to sell me clean post oak splits here in Austin.
Everyone I talk to has "firewood" which has at least 1/3 to 1/2 smallish rounds and/or rotted and worm eaten pieces included.
I found one outfit who sells cooking wood but they want $500 for 1/2 cord of seasoned clean splits but I'll go vegan before I pay that much.
Been searching Craigslist, Google and the local papers for weeks and still no luck.
Did talk to several guys off Craigslist but when I tell them I want the majority to be clean aged post oak splits, their truck is broken (or stuck in the mud and can't get out in one case) or they just never call me back..
What the heck is going on?

Last year it was raining a bunch and I couldn't get into the pasture where I cut my wood so I turned to Craigslist. I found a guy with a business called Got Wood. I'll look and see if I can find his card somewhere but right now I don't have his number. I highly recommend him. I bought a quarter cord and told him I wanted it really dry. He brought me some wood that wouldn't burn. I called him at 4:30 pm and complained. He loaded up his helper, went and split some wood for me and met me at 8:00 pm that night to exchange the wood out. I ended up buying the 2nd load from him. If you can find him he does business right.

I'll give them a shout, thanks..seems like a hard way to make a living for sure.
Also going to talk to Woodchuck Delivery, I want to get the best cooking wood I can find, firewood won't do it for me this time.
I already had to get rid of more than 1/4 cord due to worm ruined wood..perfectly good for the fireplace (I guess) but no good for brisket makin..

I'm going with Woodchuck Delivery, I explained I am super picky and want only properly aged, super clean splits (no round limbs) and he said he would hand pick me half a cord..
He is pretty pricey but if the wood is as described, I won't mind.
They were going to deliver today but it started raining so I pushed it to tomorrow..
I'll post up pics when it gets racked..

A few years ago, I bought some excellent post oak from the Elgin high school ag department. Don't know if they are still doing it. If I remember correctly, they were working on clearing some land for pasture back then, and selling the wood was a fundraiser for them. Should be able to find out with a call to the H. S..
Back in Texas, at last !!!! :texas:

I should have already posted this BUT I was not all that happy with woodchuck.
The wood they dropped looked good but turned out not to have been aged nearly enough.
It took two years to get it all the way down to 20% moister content.
Secret to success is to buy a moister meter (around $25 from Amazon) and test the wood before it comes off the trailer.

What's wrong with limb wood in your opinion?
