I can use briquettes or lump in mine. I prefer to use lump because it burns clean and I have less ash to clean up.

Lump, it's a wonderful thing. More BTUs, less ash, its the JP4 of smoking fuels . Though I have been known to take a couple of scoops of Oak coals from the wood stove to get things going

I'm a lump/charcoal guy, prefer Royal Oak for both. I think the brand of Lump is important. There's a lot of junk out there. I've experimented with different brands of lump and didn't like any of it. Couldn't find R.O. lump anywhere until this past winter, now that I've used it, I won't use anything else!

Lump is natural wood charcoal as opposed to formed briquettes. A good place to read about the different types of charcoal is at the link below.

Lump isn't coal. It's chunks of hardwoods, heated without oxygen so that most of organics gas off. You're left with about 98% carbon. No fillers/glues or binders. Good stuff, yes indeed.
